We are not necessarily looking for 'roes or heroines, but for anyone who ts humanely, even In the most ordinary Drkaday circumstances.

Do you know of a road user who has opped the traffic to help someone cross e road; gone out of their way to ensure imfort for their passengers; protected lelr load against thieves or pulled imebody from danger?

These are a few examples of the person are looking for and will take to Sweden December for a few days holiday before iristmas.

This is a joint venture with Volvo (GB) and CM. We are both deeply concerned with the image of the road transport industry, That is why we are both involved.

Why the Mark Vane award? Mark was a young man whose ambition was to follow in the footsteps of his four brothers and become a heavy goods vehicle driver. Alas, before he was 21, this young man of Kent was Involved in a fatal accident.

So well liked was young Mark, that his friends in Kent asked CM to accept a trophy for some form of safe, careful or courageous driving, in his memory. When it heard of the scheme, Volvo (GB) immediately offered to co-operate.

That was two years ago and now two recipients of the memorial award, an exclusive piece of Swedish glass, are already in the history books, Both Tom Curran (1983) and Christopher Morris (1984) were impressed with Sweden and Sweden was impressed with them.

Many British drivers could carry the flag for Britain abroad. Perhaps you know one? He could be husband, father, brother, boyfriend, the man next door or an employee. He may be unknown to you, but you've read his story in your local newspaper.

That is the person we are looking for and the search is now on.

All you have to do to nominate a candidate for the award is drop us a letter telling us why, or enclose a newspaper cutting; we'll do the rest.

Too many good deeds go unnoticed and unsung. You could be helping to pay tribute to someone who is as yet unheard of. All the nominations will be acknowledged and seriously considered by the judges, who will draw up a short list. The short list entries will be published in CM. In December, the winner of the award will visit Gothenburg and see how the Swedes prepare for Christmas. We will eat traditional pre-Christmas fare in some of Sweden's finest restaurants and join these very friendly people at work and play.

There will be a visit to Volvo's plant to meet the people who design and build Volvo trucks. Volvo is a very safety conscious company and a visit to its accident research unit is an eye-opener.

One of the highlights is a dawn event when we have Glug and ginger biscuits to celebrate the Festival of Santa Lucia.

There is also the opportunity to drive one of Volvo's newest products. Altogether, the winner has a winter break to remember.

Do you know of an unsung hero? If so, tell us the story. All you have to do is write to me: The Editor, Commercial Motor, Room 304C, Quadrant House, The Quadrant, Sutton, Surrey SM2 5AS.
