Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

YESTERDAY the Freight Transport Association once again voiced its opinion on tunnel and bridge tolls.

CM joins the FTA in asking the Government to abolish tolls. These are iniquitous charges which add unnecessarily to operating costs. A bridge or a tunnel is no more than an extension to the road network. Logically, if they carry tolls so also should motorways. Since motorways do not, neither should tunnels and bridges.

The Department of Transport argues that the transport operator saves anything up to 71 pence per mile by using these crossings. On the other hand there is the environmental benefit to the residents who live along the alternative route.

Transport operators who regularly use the crossings should join the FTA and CM to bring toll abolition about at an early date. Motoring organisations would undoubtedly add their support. If you feel strongly enough about toll charges, write to us and we will ensure that your letter reaches the Transport Secretary.
