Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

CLAIMS that there were continual problems with broken cables on tachographs fitted to M-Series ERF vehicles were made by Banton Haulage when the company appeared before the West Bromwich magistrates.

The Newport-based company, accused of using a vehicle with a defective tachograph, admitted the offence. Barbara Stubbs, prosecuting for the West Midland Licensing Authority, said that an ERF four-wheeled rigid had been stopped on the MS.

The driver produced a tachograph chart showing a broken cable and said that it had broken the previous Tuesday.

Terence Williams, a director, said they had had nothing but trouble with broken cables in relation to tachographs on the M-Series ERF.

The problem was a centre

mounted gearbox. There were three drive cables and angle sections connecting it to the cab. The manufacturer suggested replacing the manual tachographs with electronic ones.

However, in doing that, the company ran into problems as it had to cut the cross-member behind the gearbox.

Most of the teething problems with the electronic tachographs have now been resolved.

The magistrates fined the company E250 and ordered it to pay f35 towards the costs of the prosecution.
