NEW EMPLOYEES recruited after June 1 this year will be unable to take unfair dismissal claims to an industrial tribunal until after June 1, 1987.
Employment Secretary Tom King announced this measure, first detailed in last month's Budget package, in a statement issued last week. It means employees are not protected by the unfair dismissal provisions until they have completed two years' service.
At present, the two-year period applies only to companies with 20 or fewer employees.
The only exception to the change is where employees' dismissal claims are on grounds of trades union membership/non-membership, race or sex discrimination for which there is still no qualifying period.
