From, this po nt it will fan out to Covent Garden and Smithfield markets lOng one arm; and to the docks along the other.

Traffic for the London and Surrey Docks will be via Cambridge Heath Road and Sidney Street; that f r East and West India Docks arid Royal Docks via Bishop's ay, Sewardstone Road, Bonner.Rtiad; Old Ford Road, Grove Roadand Burdett Road.

An additioi al part of the scheme will be the closing of-some City streets a through routes to heavy goods vehicles. This measure is. signed, says the Minister, to encourage long..:distance drive s not to use the CitY as a short-cut, but to use the new L rry Route “' instead. He estimated that some 6,500would o so every day:

One of the float important features of the scheme, according to Mr. Mart es, is the substantial reduction planned in the number of stationary vehicles, along the route, • To this end it is proposed to extend the existing 24-hour clearways .on the Al and A6 southwards to the northern .end of Archway Road, No vehicle Will be allowed to wait on the. carriageway for any purpose, either by day or by night. Lay-bys and service bays for fronting properties will be . provided to cater for essential stopping.

It is also proposed to introduce a peak-hour clearway between the northern endof Archway Road and Holborn (Kingsway), including the parts of The Bishop's Avenue and Great North Road on the southbound route.

One-way traffic is planned to operate on part of the new "Lorry Route." The part principally concerned lies between Lyttelton Road and Holloway Road. South-bound traffic will proceed along The Bishop's Avenue, Great North Road, Archway Road and Holloway Road. North-bound traffic will travel along Pemberton Road, Pemberton Gardens, Junction ROad, Highgate Hill, Highgate High Street, North Road, North Hill and Aylmer Road.'

The Minister announced that in the long term, a numberof important improvements are planned for the "Lorry' Route." When the South Mimms By-pass is opened to traffic there will be continuous dual carriageways throughout the 11 miles from the end of M10 to Apex Corner. A 050,000 scheme to provide dual carriageways, along Falloden Way and Aylmer Road is planned to start next year.
