Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

TWO heavy materials-handling units,

machines of a elasS which hitherto have been imported, have been completed by Greenwood And Batley,-Ltd., Leeds. They are 23-ton bar-tiering trucks constructed for use in a South Wales steel works.

Power is supplied by a Leyland E36 petrol engine which drives an 18-kW. generator through a flexible coupling. linking with two 9-h.p. motors. One motor is fitted on each of the twin driving axles, which are situated at the front of the truck. The load rating is 30,000 lb. at 24 in. from the heel of the 42-in. ram. The design provides for loads to be lifted from 12 in. to 72 in. at a speed of 10-12 ft. per minute Loaded. When lowering with ,Ioad the operating rate is 35 ft. per minute.

A differential unit is employed on each driving axle and further differential action is obtained electrically between the two operating . motors. Lifting is by means of a hydraulic pump unit, and the steering action is assisted by a further pump unit located at the rear of the machine.

Speeds are controlled by a reversing controller which is arranged to provide four speeds in each direction. This device also incorporates a time delay fitted on the contactors to give a delayed accelerating period. An interlocking arrangement is provided between the brake pedal and the controller, making it impossible to apply power to the driving motors without first releasing the brakes which, when standing, remain " on."

On the carburetter is an automatic governing device which ensures that the engine-driven generator will accelerate up to a speed proportional to the required load immediately the driver takes power for steering, driving or hoisting.

The generator is used as a starting motor for the engine, and current is obtained for this purpose from a 24-v. lead-acid battery. All braking and driving controls are duplicated being located on both off and near sides.
