Versatile New Hose Clip

ACLIP which can be adapted for any diameter of hose from I in. to 6 in. will be placed on the market next month by. F. H. Bourner and Co. (Engineers), Ltd., Manor Royal, Crawley, Sussex.

It incorporates a unit housing of toughened steel, zinc plated, and a zincplated alloy-steel eye-bolt. A length to suit the hose diameter, allowing an overlap, is cut from a roll of zinc-coated steel strip, which is treated with a rustproofing dye.

One end of the strip TS inserted in a slot in the unit housing and 'bent under. The eye-bolt is then entered into the housing, and a hexagon, knurled or wing nut holds it in place. The steel strip is wrapped round the hose, threaded through the eye-bolt and bent over, and the nut is then tiettencd. Eight Hauliers Snub "Pressure Group" E1GHT hauliers last week snubbed the I—, sub-committee set up by the National Joint Industrial Council to exert pressure on operators who did not put into effect the Council's recommended 10s. wage increase on February 21, 1955. Of nine hauliers who were invited to attend a meeting at Cambridge last week to discuss the matter, only one appeared.

He was Mr. P. Pointer, of Pointers Transport Services, Ltd.', Norwich. He agreed to make back-payments from February 21 to May 9 of last year.

Altogether 13 operators in the Eastern and Northern Areas are con cerned in the dispute. Two others agreed to make back-payments white the negotiations were in progress.

Hauliers who do not come into line will be taken to the Industrial Court by the union, with the backing of the Road Haulage Association. The subcommittee now have nothing further to do.

The hauliers affected operate from Milnethorpe, Arnsidc, Beccles, Norwich, Lowestoft, South wold, Stowmarket, Ipswich, Barrow in Furness and Newcastle upon Tyne. Only the Eastern Area operators were asked to attend the Cambridge meeting.

BUSES SAVING £100 A YEAR EACH L'UEL savings by lightweight Daimler double-deckers put into service in October last year by Coventry Transport Department, have been calculated at £100 a year per vehicle. The vehicles cost 14,488 10s. 6d. each, compared with £4,649 10s. 9d. for some buses purchased two years ago.

Bodywork is of steel framing with aluminium panels. Windows are all of safety glass. The finish consists of two coats of synthetic paint and a coat of varnish, instead of six coats. This saved 65 lb. in weight and £25 in cost. Unladen weight of the new vehicles-60-seaters—is a ton lower than that Of the older 58-seaters.

The 8.4-litre engines have external induction feed. The fuel-consumption rate of the new buses is about 10.25 m.p.g., compared with 9 m.p.g. for the other models.

MEDIUM-SIZED COMPANY FAVOURED

QNE of the principles upon which a managerial-training scheme of Oldham and Sons, Ltd., Denton, Manchester, is based is that at least half the trainees should be existing employees, but when, applications from outsiders were invited it was found that many candidates favoured the c omp a ri y because it was a medium-sized unit, rather than an industrial giant.

The company set up a recruitment and training committee last year to tackle their peconnel problem.
