Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

Lifting-block Gears Covering Loads of From 5 ant. to 10 tons with Hand-switch Control F"occasional lifting work and where time is not a Vitally important f acto r, the manually operated chain-type of block no doubt serves its purpose. The modern interpretation of lifting-block gears, however, are those operated by selfcontained electric motors, of which those •made by G. W. King, Ltd., Hartford Works, Hitchin, Hefts, are well known, In the accompanying illustration we show a typical example

—one of a range of three models, known respectively as Minor, Major and 'Mammoth, designed to cope with loads from 5 cwt. to 10 tons,

The Minor, with single reeving, lifts a 5-cwt: load at a speed of 30 ft. per min.,' and 'with double .reeving .a 1-ton load at .15 •ft. per min. Respective loads and speeds for the Major and Mammoth models are Major (single),

1 ton, 20 ft, per min. .and double, 2 ton, 10 ft.. per min.; Mammoth 21 tom, 30 ft. per min.: double, 5 tors, 15 ft. 'per min.: triple, 7i tons, 10 ft. per min.; quadruple, 10 tons.

The speeds given . are those representing khe standard, but the maker 'is prepared to meet individual requirements 'in respect of most of the important features, such as the fitting of two 'speeds for lift and traverse, a variation of the voltage which is normally 400-440 (three phase, 50 cycleS), and so on, An important_ Point in the design of such tackle 'is in the retention' of balance under conditions of lift. In this connection King blocks are not affected by the Toad as the pull is taken from the centre of balance of the block.

A feature of these bloCks 'is 'the hand-switch system of 'control which gives precise regulation of hoisting, lowering and stopping. .

In connection with these electric chain blocks there are several variations of .their application, and the type of overhead mounting is governed by the particular use for which the tackle is required. Information and advice on .these points can be obtained from the Maker.
