Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

TBE Winter months actually only brought one spell of severe weather (although no one woUld be so bold as to say, within the ice-god's hearing, that all risk of frosts has passed!), and the tala of cracked cylinders and split water jackets was not a very serious one. Vat all that, with a million or more engines in existence, the number of mishaps ran into many hundreds, which before the days of welding, would have meant a heavy loss to the comrminity. We were interested,at the time in a repair that was carried out almost opposite the London offices cf Temple Press Ltd. in Rosebery Avenue, by the New Welding Co., and it has been of further interest to know that the repair, extensive as it was, has been entirely successful and that the engine is running as well as ever it did.

Li this Particular case the foureylindered engine block had suffered through frost, the combustion head and water jacket having been broken out and the foot of the casting broken off, and, in addition, that one of the bores was badly scored through a gudgeon pin floating about., Each and every detail of the damage is met with by a welding repairer hundreds of times in a year, but the directors of the New Welding Co. told us that it is very un usual to receive a cylinder casting with so much to be done to it. However, nothing ever seems to daunt a welding expert, so the head was welded up, the water jacket and the foot made good and then the scoring of the bore was taken in hand and repaired by the use of the New Welding

patent alloy process. The cylinder bore was then ground true. to take the existing piston and, what is very portant, the face was surface ground. The alloy with which gudgeon-pin scores arc filled is guaranteed to last the life of the engineā€”a factor of material importance to any owner or fleet engineer faced with the unpleasant discovery of a groove in a cylinder wall.

Nowadays welding repairs are carried out at competitive prices, and the old system of charging a percentage of the value of the repaired article has gone by the'board. Hence welding, besides being an efficient and rapid way of restoring a component part, is inexpensive and satisfactory. The saving of time compared to replacement by new parts is often considerable.
