[2964] (Manchester).–We are unable, due to enlistments and pressure of war work, to search for an article which you are unable to identify in your letter. Large numbers of articles which we have published deal with the subject to which you refer. We can, however, broadly inform you, and at the same time express the hope that the points which we mention are the essential ones for which you are looking, that the following comparisons are approximately correct at the present time, in costs per mile of running !—One-horse van, 6d. per mile on a basis of work ranging from 100 to 120 miles a week ; twohorse van, with one reserve horse, on basis of 150 to 160 miles a week, 9d. per mile; one-ton motorvan, on basis of not less than 350 miles per week, 6d. per mile; two-ton motorvan, same basis, 8d. per mile ; three-ton motorvan, same basis, 10d. per mile ;fiveton motorvan, same basis, Is. id. per mile. These are the all in " costs for owners who provide their own loads. Contractors are not able to take such low rates.
