view by the hawk Commercial Motor takes road haulage very seriously. However, once a week our quirky correspondent, the Hawk, steps off his perch to take a humorous look at the industry to keep us all sane. If you have any off-beat yarns that illustrate the stranger, or sillier, side of the business he'd like to hear from you. As a softhearted old bird he's also happy to publicise charitable works— and is always interested in events for the vintage vehicles he drove as a fledgling. Drop the Hawk a line at Commercial Motor, Bird's Eye View, Ftm H203, Quadrant House, The Quadrant, Sutton, Surrey SM2 SAS, or fax him on 0181 6S2 8969.

On top of the world

0 t's Monday morning and cms intrepid newshounds set out doggedly to hunt down the stories that matter. Stripped down for action, no terrain is too difficult to master in the quest to nail those rogue hauliers or to find out which truckstop is serving the best value in all-day breakfasts.

Well, that's what it looked like to me until I put my glasses on and read the accompanying press release. Seems this is, after all, a charity climb of Mount Snowdon by staff at DFDS to raise mone, for sufferers of multiple sclv, rosis.

The woman being carried in a lightweight wheelchair is Susie Cornell, founder of Under Pressure, a clinic in Chelmsford offering specialist treatment and support to peo ple with MS. The DFDS Transport team completed the 1,085m climb to the summit in one hour, 41 minutes, not the front runners, but ahead of seven other teams.

The event added to £15,000 raised so far by the team in 1996. It hopes to top 431,500 raised for good causes last year.
