Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Renault Trucks has launched three new models: a revised line-up of G-range trucks called the Manager; a charge-cooled version of its B-range; and a more productive variant of its Midliner 7.5-tonner.

The Manager features an updated interior, some detail chassis improvements and, on the G230TI two-axle rigid, the option of Renault's ACS automatic clutch system. The G330 tractor has been superseded by the G340TI which was previously available only on the Continent.

Managers can be ordered from UK dealers now; they cost 3% more than basic G-range models. Their rectangular headlamps and more modern interiors are designed to keep the ageing 'Club of Four' cab up with the competition; but the ACS system is of greater technical significance.

It was developed for urban distribution and municipal usage and has been proven over five years and 50 million kilometres on Renault refuse collectors.

The clutch and gearbox are mechanically identical to a standard transmission, but there is no clutch pedal. Instead the clutch is operated pneumatically under electronic control, and is triggered by pressure on the gearshift lever.

ACS costs £1,500 but Renault predicts a swift payback, claiming that it extends clutch life by 300%, reduces driveline wear and can cut fuel consumption by as much as 5%. Maintenance of the additional mechanical components is said to be simple; checks on the ACS electronics package rely on a basic on-board test function and Renault's £3,000 Diagnostica test equipment. The Diagnostica system is designed to fault-find on all the electronic equipment fitted to current and future Renault trucks. So far only two Diagnostica units are in UK dealers: RTI stresses that more are on order.

Further down the weight range, Renault's 5.0 and 6.0tonne B-Series follows the lead of Iveco Ford's TurboDaily by offering the charge-cooled version of the 2.5-litre Sofim diesel. The B120 is available from dealers now with 9% more power than the Bib 0 (85kW/116hp) and 5% more torque (246Nm/1811bft).

Improved productivity is also claimed for the S160.08/A Midliner, which combines the lighter /A chassis with the most powerful engine option at 7.5 tonnes. It is up to 400kg lighter than the superseded S160.08/13.
