The engine fitted to the SM36 280 is a turbocharged version of the naturally aspirated MAN engine fitted to the 240. Engine output (BS AU 141a : net installed) is in creased from 151kW (202bhp) to 181kW (242bhp) at 2200rpm and peak torque is boosted from 726Nm (5351bft) to 857Nm (6321bft) at 1400rpm.

Modifications to the naturally aspirated engine to meet the increased stresses included by turbocharging include changes to piston construction and the design of the combustion chamber. Saviem's own type 4751 on double-reduction spiralel rear axle completes the e-line specification. The Idard axle ratio is 6.44 to 1 this is supplemented by • options, 5.72, 6,06, 6.87 7.36 to 1. Slipper-ended leaf springs with Aeon rubber helpers and an anti-roll bar are fitted at the rear axle with leaf springs backed up by telescopic dampers at the front.

The full air-brake system features " S" cam operated brake units at each wheel with automatic slack adjusters standard at the front. Park requirements are met by lock actuators at the rear axle only. A pneumatically operated exhaust valve is supplied.

The all-steel tilt cab has two tilt positions, 45deg for normal servicing and 60deg for major repairs. Cab tilting is easily handled by one man and is torsion bar assisted.

The SM36 280 retains the steering column gearchange from the SM32 240 and the instrumentation has been improved to provide a more easily read rev counter.

Fuel tank capacity has been increased from 200 litres (44ga1) to 360 litres (79gal).
