overtaking ban 'time bomb'

THE FREIGHT TRANSPORT Association (ETA) has hit back at the High ways Agency (H A ) plan for an overtaking ban on the A14, calling it a "time bomb for gridlock".

At an ETA East Midlands Freight Council held in Nottingham, operators expressed their concern about the scheme, which is likely to be introduced between] unctions 0 and 1 eastbound and land 2 westbound (CM 12 October).

Chief among their concerns is the expected growth in imports over the next 10 years. especially through Felixstowe already the largest container port in the UK. Steve Kelly, head of policy at the ETA, says: "The Al4 is already running at capacity. Widening the road is the only long-term solution."

The HA says: "The proposals are at a very early stage and are one option being considered by the Highways Agency to reduce congestion on this busy stretch of the A14. The agency has carried out a consultation with a wide variety of road users and interested parties regarding this trial. The HA will consider their comments before taking this ban forward."
