THE NUMBER OF redundancies that are to result from 3663 losing a major contract with the Ministry of Defence is not as high as first thought, according to the GMB union.
Large-scale job losses were predicted at depots in Basingstoke, Bradford and Dundonald in Ayrshire following the loss of the contract to the Purple Foodservice consortium.
The new contractor will recruit 30 staff from 3663's Basingstoke depot to relocate to its site at Petersfield, Hants. As a result the number of staff being made redundant from Basingstoke has fallen from 220 to 190.
Job losses have also been contained at Dundonald in central Scotland. The GMB says that at one stage it had been told that some 88 staff were going to be made redundant but that number has now fallen by 50 to 38. There will still be 38 job losses at the Bradford site.
The GMB is currently going through consultation to discuss the redundancies: this ends on 1 November for the sites in Scotland and Bradford and 1 January for Basingstoke GMB national officer Alan Black says: "We're still trying to ensure the best redundancy terms for those people who are going to lose their jobs.'
