A Labour MEP has entered the ongoing debate over inspection standards for foreign trucks. David Harris reports.

THE WIDOW of a driver killed earlier this year in a collision with a Dutch truck has won the support of an MEP in her campaign to raise foreign vehicle safety standards Jackie Warby has already collected a 1,700-signature petition to ensure foreign drivers and trucks undergo safety checks and stricter enforcement of drivers' regulations. Now Labour MEP for the East of England Richard Howitt has called for all European truck inspection standards to meet UK requirements.

Jackie Warby launched her campaign after her husband Stephen was killed in a headon crash with a Dutch driver at Northwold,Norfolk,in March. The Dutch driver was on the wrong side of the road and was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving, but no charges were brought.

Jackie Warby says: The police don't really do very much. My husband had braked all he could and it seemed that the Dutch driver hadn't braked at all. But his truck was completely destroyed by tire so there was little left to examine.

Jackie Warby added that the Dutch driver was carrying a load of flowers which were on their way to be delivered to the company where she works.

Family, friends and colleagues of Stephen Warby have alread) raised £2,000 for the East Anglian Air Ambulance in his memory.

Jackie Warby explains: The air ambulance wasn't used for him, but he said to me a couple of months before the accident that it was the sort of service he might have to use one day and that he had a lot of respect for it."

The biggest donation has come from his former employer, KGB Transport of Tilney St Lawrence. Another haulage firm, GE-BE Transporthas agreed to take Jackie and her petition to Parliament.
