Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Sales of second-hand refrigerated semitrailers have been in the doldrums for the past 18 months, says Steve Wild, asset manager at GE Capital-Key Lease. "They're very poor performers at present," he reports.

"They're slow to move,' agrees Lee Buckler, used sales manager at SIX Trailers. "Some are being exported, but overseas buyers don't always want to pay the prices."

Wild is unsure why demand should be so slack at the moment, but suspects that it may have something to do with the way in which new

double-decker temperaturecontrolled trailers are being energetically promoted by certain manufacturers.

"Claims are being made that the days of the conventional straight-frame reefer are numbered," he says. "But double-deckers can cost in excess of £100,000 new, and it has yet to be proved that they are that much more productive.

"By contrast curtainsiders are selling well, as are sliding skeletals, and box trailers aren't doing too badly," he says. "We're seeing increased interest In van trailers in the runup to Christmas."
