port firm was told by the Metropolitan Licensing Authority, Mr. D. I. R. Muir, on Wednesday, that he had considered imposing a penalty on her for making untrue statements on forms for A and B licences. He was satisfied, however, that the statements were not wholly untrue and he would be lenient and allow the licences to continue.

But he warned Miss Patricia Payne. proprietor of Payne's Transport, of Pandora Road, West Hampstead: "As you know, the licences come up for renewal in May, I believe. If I find that you or your properly appointed manager are not running this business, and that you are merely a cover for others, there is no question but that the licences will disappear."

Mr. Muir said the circumstances in which the firm had been taken over were such that there was some suspicion, at any rate, that it was not going to be run by Miss Payne but by others. He opened an inquiry, under Section 175(1)(d) of the Road Traffic Act, 1960, by saying to Miss Payne: "This time I want the truth from you. You didn't give it to me last time."

Miss. Payne said that apparently she had given the wrong information in respect of the B licence. She was acting on information given to her by her transport manager who was not now with the business.

Mr. Muir: " Are you saying you left the control of this company to this transport manager? "—" Yes, practically."

Where is he now? "—" I have no idea."

Miss Payne stated that she now had a new manager, Mr. Eugene Cahinn. In further answers to Mr. Muir, Miss Payne denied that a Mr. Clayton had anythin.7 to do with the business. Her former transport manager would have no connection with the business in future.
