The Latest Doings and Developments in the Bus and Coach World.

MODERN RUSES OF DIFFERENT 'TYPES.

A Brief Description of a Municipal Trolley-bus for Bradford and of a Motorbus for a Private Owner in Scotland.

TEM trolley-bus continues to make considerable headway in municipal circles, and the list of authorities which are turning to the use of such vehicles, in pi:therence to undertaking tramway extensions or in substitution for the rail-bound system, is becoming 'longer and longer. The name of the Bradford City Corporation now figures on this list and the anthorites have recently taken delivery of the A.D.C. trolley-bps illustrated on this page, which is the first of three similar vehicles they have

purchased. This machine is typical of modern trolley-bus design and embodies features which indicate the trend of development in this direction.

The chassis is that which the makers, the Associated Daimler Co., Ltd., Welthatustow, London, E.17, style their Model 607 and, as some of our readers may be aware, its design is based on the company's well-known Model 507 petrol-driven chassis. Its main dimensions are : wheelbase, 14 ft. 6 ins.; track (front), 6 ft. 4 ins. (rear), 6 ft. 1 ins. ; frame length overall, 25 ft. 10 ins. ; frame length behind rear axle, 7ft. 2 ins.

The motor used on the A.D.C. trolleyhus chassis is the Bull traction-type, made by E. R. and P. Turner, Ltd., of Ipswich, and it is rated at 55 h.p. at 1,030 r.p.m., in accordance with the British Standard Specification 173 of 1923. It is of the ventilated and interpole pattern. An E.M.B. tvne-T footoperated controller is used and this is arranged with five plain series accelerating notches, operated in conjunction with the A.D.C_ patent device for automatically shunting the field current by means of a governor and a contactor.

A tubular shaft, having Spicer universal joints enclosed in dust-proof and rrease-tight cases at each 'end, is provided between motor and rear axle ; the latter is made from a nickel steel drop forgiug and has an underslung worm. The front axle is an I-seetion Steel

C88 stiunping. The pressed-steel channelsectionframe members are parallel from end to end.

The internal-expanding brakes, which are provided on all four wheels, are operated by the Westinghouse thr-brakbig system. The -internal-expanding brakes on the rear wheels are actilated by hand, whilst the external-contracting brake on the transmission shaft to the rear of the motor is foot-controlled, the pedal being placed to the left of the contnoller pedal.

'Pre bodies fur the A.D.C. trolley-bus chassis supplied to Bradford are the product of Messrs. Strachan and Brown, North Acton, London, WA; and are of the type which is shown in our illustration. This is built 012 roomy lines and seating acommodation for 36 people is provided in a single deck. The seats are of Messrs. Strachan and Brown's spring-hack pattern and are upholstered in real leather. The passenger entrance and exit is arranged in the centre of the near side and, being of wide dimensions and of the double-folding type, it enables loading and unloading to he readily carried mit and without the risk of undue congestion.

The windows on each side can he lowered and their regulation is controlled by the patent Strachan and Brown method ; pivot-type ventilators (two for each main light) an; fitted above them. The driver's cab is separated from . the passenger compartment by a 'full-width partition and is reached by way of a door on the near side ahead of the front wheel.

The Bradford trolley-buses are fitted with a trolley-pole deviation indicator, a device invented by Mr. R. fl. Wilkin-, son, M.Itist.T., the general manager and engineer of the city tramways.. Other useful fittings include an electric windscreen wiper, a foot gong, an electric horn and a speedometer. The vehicle is shod with pneumatic tyres all round. of. 38 ins.' by 7 ins. dimensions, and twins are used on the rear wheels. This equipment, coupled with efficient chassis .springing and Well-sprung seats, ensures good riding comfort at speeds up to 28 m.p.h., which is the speed capability of the machine when fully laden.

• The bus shown in the other picture consists of a Lancia chassis on which Messrs. Strachan and Browii have'• mounted a Special saloon body to the order of Mr. A. E. Strachan; of Ballater,

who is • using the vehicle for a daily serviee in the Ballater district

It will be noted that the sides of the body are built low in order to give a Icw-loading appearance, but we are told that this form of construction does not interfere with the accessibility of those chassis parts requiring periodical attention. The construction of the scuttle dashboard and the Use of a deep sloping metal windscreen ensures that the driver secures a goodview of the road ahead.

The body is of the one-man-operated type and the door which encloses the opening leading to and from the interior is of the two-piece folding variety. It covers the entire opening and is controlled by the bodybuilders' oWn

operating mechanism. An emergency door is provided in the rear 'panel, in

which there is an oval light of large dimensions.

The seats in this body are also of the spring-back type, with a division in the centre. They are upholstered in leather end the squabs are well padded, the backs of the seats being covered with a carpeting to match. The main windows, with the exception of the fixed Dshaped lights at the rear, can all be lowered. A large portion of the roof is enclosed by a luggage rail, and for reaching it hinged steps are fitted to the near side of the body.
