• A West Yorkshire waste

disposal firm which said it had been let down by its maintenance contractors had the authorisation on its licence reduced from five vehicles to four for a month at a Leeds disciplinary inquiry.

Guiseley-based Aireborough Waste Traders appeared before North Eastern Deputy Traffic Commissioner Patrick Mulvenna.

Vehicle examiner Kenneth Howram said a colleague had examined four vehicles during a maintenance investigation, and issued two immediate prohibition notices for defective brakes an loose wheelnuts. The firm wa aware of the defective brake having been told by its maint( nance contractor they neede re-lining but that the vehicl would be OK to use meanwhile.

In reply to Timothy Harrisoi for the firm, Howram said ii would not hay expected a vehicl

with defectiv brakes to hay been released b the maintenanc contractor.

Partner Terenc Sandham said they had sinc changed maintenance contm tors. Until the vehicle examiner visit he had thought that the: were no problems with vehicl maintenance as they had not ha a prohibition notice since 1996.

Asked why a conviction for a axle overload had not bee reported to the TC, Sandham sai he had not known that he should Harrison said it was a sma family business which since previous public inquiry in 199 had moved away from its laisse: faire attitude towards maim( nance. They were trying hard t get things right.

The Deputy TC asked for further maintenance investigi tion in six months' time. I] accepted the firm had made ste: ling efforts to improve since th last public inquiry but conclude that he was looking for a drama ic improvement in the future.
