• A package of green initiatives has been introduced by Harris Distribution, which has become one of the first companies to meet a new UK environmental standard.

The food and retail logistics company has successfully been assessed against the newly published British Standard for Environmental Management Systems — BS7750.

At present the standard only applies to the company's warehouse and distribution centre in Slough. But Harris Distribution's parent company Transport Development Group (TDG) is considering introducing similar environmental measures across the group.

Among the initiatives introduced by Harris Distribution to meet the new standards are regular environmental audits, en vironmental training for staff and a register of relevant legislation. The company was assessed over four days and will now be subjected to regular checks to ensure it continues to meet the standards.

CI Final touches are being put to a new environmental survey of transport operators by the Institute of Logistics and Distribution Managers. It aims to set standards of environmentally friendly transport for retailers and manufacturers.

More than 8,000 questionnaires were sent to ILDM members including questions on the use of rail, fuel-saving measures, warehouse design and vehicle routeing.
