AS Black County hauliers signed a new pay agreement with the Transport and General Workers' Union last week Scottish hauliers were preparing to meet the unions for their pay negotiations.

And as both sides prepared for the meeting, hauliers were hoping that the trend set by Alan Law's men in Birmingham would be followed by the Scots drivers too.

But Glasgow TGWU branch secretary Peter Talbot had hopes of beating the five per cent rise and £5.50 a night subsistence level that the Black Country men had agreed to.

"We want to see a payment for weekend work, for the lads who have to work when their families are at home, and we want to see a sick pay scheme too," said Mr Talbot.

"So far they have offered us £5.50 subsistence, but I want to see if we can beat that."

Back in Birmingham the Black Country hauliers and the TGWU settled for the £5.50 a night and a five per cent rise. that will mean between £4 and £2.50 a week. Holidays are calculated at 50 hours a week plus E6 and the five per cent.

The Brark Country agreement will affect the TGWU members in West Bromwich, Wolverhampton, and South Staffordshire.
