Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• If Britain enters the Common Market the compulsory fitting of tachographs to commercial vehicles will not be required before 1976.

Mr John Peyton, the Minister for Transport Industries, announced in the Commons that the EEC had agreed that the date for compulsory fitment to new vehicles and to those carrying dangerous goods might be deferred for one year until January 1, 1976.

For other vehicles of the classes affected, the date would be January 1, 1978.

Mr Peyton added that he had set up a working party, consisting of representatives of the tachograph interests now operating in the United Kingdom and officials of the Department to look at the problems associated with the use of the instruments. Both sides of industry and other interested bodies would, he said, be consulted.

The working party was intended to complement the discussions started earlier this year with the road transport industry to review the goods vehicles drivers' hours and records requirements in Part VI of the Transport Act 1968.

Lancs records case adjourned

• The hearing against the Lancasterbased company, Norman Hargreaves and Sons Ltd (CM November 12) relating to 170 summons alleging drivers' hours and records offences has now been deferred from November 29 until a later date. The case arises out of checks made on records in conjunction with clockcards and not tachographs as previously stated.
