• Mr Peter Walker, the Secretary for the Environment, last week explained how and why he had changed his mind over the way in which public transport should be run under the new local government set-up.
While he could see the need for the counties to have co-ordinating powers over transportation throughout a county area which he had given them, he could also see valid arguments why there was no need to take certain local authority bus undertakings away from the authority concerned, went on Mr Walker.
For example, in seaside resorts a special transport system frequently operated to benefit the tourist. Therefore he had left the majority of the districts running municipal bus services the power to continue this function.
