Comparatively Few Units Sold in Sheffield, Rotherham and Barnsley : R.H.A. Official Blames Local Scarcity of Small-vehicle Lots

THE " little man" is not being given a chance to buy vehicles from British Road Services in Sheffield, Rotherham and Barnsley, according to Mr. P. J. Cheshire, Sheffield and South Yorkshire area secretary of the Road Haulage Association.

Comparatively few units are being sold in that area, and Mr. Cheshire attributes it to the scarcity of smallvehicle lots.

Most of the names of purchasers given below are listed in the current issues of A pplications and Decisions for the licensing areas concerned.

SCOTLAND Peter Saddler and Co., Ltd., Leith, have been granted special A licences for 10 vehicles (36) tons).

Central Garage (Bathgate), Ltd., Bathgate, who have purchased 17 vehicles (541 tons), have made the following assignments: One vehicle (3 tons) to Mr. Alexander M. Wright, Dalkeith; one (3 tons) to Oswald Transport, Ltd., Frabboch; two (6) tons) to Messrs. Russell of Bathgate, Bathgate; one (3 tons) to Mr. W. G. D. Pollock, Edinburgh; one (3 tons) to Dalkeith Transport and Storage Co., Ltd., Dalkeith; one (3 tons) to Thomas Smith, Junr. (Newhaven), Ltd.; four (121 tons) to William Griffith (Whitburn), Ltd., Armadale; two (6 tons) to Ferry Road Garage, Ltd., Leith; one (22 tons) to Messrs. James Robertson and Sons, East Calder; one (3) tons) to J. and G. Campbell, Ltd„ Dalkeith; and two (6) tons) to Messrs. Wright Bros., Tranent.

Assignments have also been made by Mr. Henry Arnott, Galashiels, who has acquired four vehicles (18 tons). He has made over three (14 tons) to Messrs. John Arnott and Sons, Galashiels, and one (4 tons) to Messrs. F. and F. Moffat, Coldstream.

Mr. David H. Connell, Bonnybridge, has sold one vehicle (3 tons) to Mr. Peter Stewart, Bonnybridgc. Ed. Robertson and Co., Ltd., Dundee, who have bought 11 vehicles (43 tons) have made over the following: Three (10 tons) to Allisons Transport (Contracts), Ltd.. Dundee; one (3 tons) to Mr. William F. Brown, Muirdrum, by Carnoustie; and one (4) tons) to Mr. Harry B. S. Lawson, Broughty Ferry.

Messrs. J. and D. Mackenzie, Beauly, have acquired three vehicles (9) tons) and sold one (3) tons) to Messrs. William Rose and Son. Contin, Strathpeffer. Two of three vehicles (9 tons) acquired by Mr. Morris Young have been assigned. One (3 tons) has gone to Mr. David FL Duncan, Alyth, and another (3 tons) to Mr. Peter Halley, Crieff. Mr. James S. Dochard, Perth, who has also bought three vehicles (141 tons), has sold one (4) tons) to Mr. B. McLuskey, Aldmondbank.

Mr. Alexander Hutcheson, Dundee, has taken over one vehicle (3 tons) from Alfred E. Pow,rie and Son, Ltd., Dundee, who purchased three (9 tons). Mr. Peter Whittcl, Balbeggie, has assigned one (3 tons) of three vehicles (9 tons) to Mr. Thomas S. Forsyth, Burrelton. Mr. James Ettles, Cullen, has made over one (3 tons) to Mr. Peter G. Barclay, Portsoy, Mr. Ettles is left with one vehicle.

Mr. John Robertson, Inverness, who has hour.ht two vehicles (6 tons), has assigned D2.0 one (3 tons) to Mr. Duncan Scott, Beauly. One vehicle (4) tons) has been assigned to Messrs. James Kinnear and Son, Thornton, by Messrs. Anderson Bros., Markinch, who have purchased three (101 tons).

The Scottish Licensing Authority has also granted special A licences to Messrs. R. and F. Wallace, Dunlop, for one vehicle (3 tons); Mr. David W. Ward, Alva, one (31 tons); Mr. A. A. Young, Kelty. four (171 tons); Clark and Dutch, Ltd., Perth, three (9) tons); and Messrs. A. W. and Fraser, Fearn, three (91 tons).

NORTH-WEST Five vehicles (14) tons) purchased by Mr. C. M. Jones, 18 Maesowen, Welshpool, have been made over to Aber Carriers (1954), Ltd., Vulcan Works, Salop Road, Welshpool.

A repeat purchase has been made by Midway Garage and Haulage, Ltd., Orrell Street, Britannia Bridge, Wigan. One vehicle (8 tons) is concerned.

Messrs. A. A. and A. Burton (T. Burton), 9 Boothroyden Road, Middleton, Manchester, have acquired their first vehicle (7) tons) from Mr. S. Sykes, Ackworth, near Pontefract.

YORKSHIRE Sales of units in Sheffield, Rotherham and Barnsley continue to he small compared with the rest of the country. Leonard Green (Haulage), Ltd., Parkgate, Rotherham, have taken over six lorries in a repeat purchase. J. G. Fielder (Haulage), Ltd., Fitzwilliam Street, Bradford, have also bccn successful with another tender, this time for three vehicles and three trailers.

Mr. L. H. Mills, 13 Daniel Hill Terrace, Sheffield, 6, has acquired one vehiele.

WEST MIDLANDS Clee Hill Transport and Rolling Co., Ltd., Craven Place, Clec Hill, who have bought 10 vehicles (43) tons), have assigned two (6) tons) to Burgoyne's of Lyonshall, Ltd., Lyonshall, and one (4) tons) to Mr. M. T. Lloyd, Temeside Garage, Ludford Bridge, Ludlow. Mr. G. S. Webb, Junr, 28 Leek Road, Stoke-on-Trent, has purchased two vehicles (101 tons) and assigned one (3 tons) to Mrs. B. E. Morris (E. Morrig), 78 Jervis Street, Hanley.

Repeat purchases have been made by Collins's Express Parcels Service, Ltd., Lichfield Road, Walsall Wood, of six vehicles (161 tons), and Henry Poole and Son, Ltd., 21 Hunter's Road, Hockley, Birmingham, of two (12) tons).

Mr. J. H. Aldridge, 33 Werrington Road, Bucknall, Stoke-on-Trent, heads the list of new purchasers with one vehicle (3 tons). The others are Mr. W. E. Maybury, 164 Hinckley Road, Nuneaton, two (6 tons); Messrs. J. P., G. P. and D. P. Smith (J. P. Smith and Sons), Wem, one (3 tons); and Mr. S. E. Foster, 18 Hall Street, Wednesfield, two (9) tons).

EASTERN COUNTIES One vehicle (2) tons), included in a purchase of six vehicles and two trailers (23) tons) made by Mr. J. Tubby, 385 Whapload Road, Lowcstoft, has been sold to Ks. E. A. Barnard (W. Barnard), 7 Trawl Market, Lowestoft.

All the remaining purchasers reported this week have been successful with previous tenders. Mr. C. F. Harrison, The Bridge, Surfleet, has bought three vehicles (9) tons); H. H. Kemp and Sons, Ltd., Friar's Street, Sudbury, two (5) tons); and Messrs. D. R. and J. S. Briggs (J. S. Briggs and Son), Bridge Works, ThorneY, Peterborough, one (5 tons).

One of the vehicles (3) tons) bought by Mr. Harrison has been taken over by Mr.

C. E. Ground, Cradge Bank Road, Spalding.

. SOUTH WALES New purchasers reported this week am: Mr. Owen Lewis, Hafod Garage, Black Rock, Brynmawr, three vehicles (13) tons); Mr. T. Rowland, 16 Commercial Street, Nelson, Glam., one (31 tons); Newport Motor (Transport) Co., East Usk Road, Newport, two (6 tons); Holloway Bros. (Bridgend), Ltd., 62 South Road, Porthcaw], one (4) tons); Mostyns' Motors (Port Talbot), Ltd., Cunard Garage, Cwmavon, Port Talbot, one (3) tons); and Edward Jenkins and Son. Ltd., 6 Cwmlan Street, Landore, five (19 tons).

The lorries taken over by Mr. Lewis are engaged at the present time on carrying steel to the Midlands from the Ebbw Vale works of Richard, Thomas and Baldwin's, Ltd.

Mr. F. S. Jones (Fred Jones and Co.), Port Tennant Cooperage, Swansea, has again been successful with a tender, this time for three vehicles, including one articulated outfit (21) tons). . Assignments_ have been made by Messrs. Valfeys Carriers, Grove Terrace, Penarth,

SOUTHERN AREA Messrs. R. and H. Smith, The Wharf, Mill Street, Wantage, have made a second purchase, this time of one vehicle (31 tons). Repeat purchases have also been made by Mr. W. N. Shearing, Grateley, Andover, of three vehicles (91 tons); Victory Transport, Ltd., Old Mill Quay, Northam, three (11.1 tons); and J. and R. F. Dutton. Ltd., Sidlesham Common, Chichester, two (15'1 tons); One vehicle (3 tons) has been taken over by Mr. R. W. Burtwell (Burtwells Transport), I The Hyde, Ray Mill Road, Maidenhead.

• Of six vehicles (18 tons) bought by Mr. .F. A. Wiltshire, 72 Circuit Lane, Reading, three (91 tons) have been made over to Mr. E. E. Bamford, Mansfield Road Garage, Alfreton, Derbys. Two vehicles (6 tons) bought by Mr. S. Rawlings, 80a Weyhilt Road, Andover, Hants, have been assigned to J. Rawlings (Haulage), Ltd., at the same address. .

The vehicle purchased by Mr. Warren was assigned by F. 1. Hill (Dunstable),

Ltd., The Old Brewery, Dunstable. It was one of two (10 tons 1 cwt.) assigned to them by Mr. T. Regan, Chun Farm, Horsmonden.

Wright and Co. (King's Cross), Ltd., 147 Caledonian Road, London, N.1, have bought another three vehicles (3 tons 14 cwt.), and L. T. Redburn, Ltd., Stockingswater Lane, Brirnsdown. Enfield, have purchased anotherr. two (131 tons) and a trader.

Messrs. W. J. P. Wood and P. Lee (Lee's Direct Transport Co.), 372 Hertford

Road, Enfield, have made over two vehicles (5 tons 4 cwt.) and a trailer to Lee's Direct Transport Co. (Enfield), Ltd.

Mr. A. Firmin, Wares Farm, Linton, who has acquired five vehicles (161 tons), has assigned three (10 tons) to Mr. G. Rosman, Farleigh Lane, Harming, Maidstone.

Two of the vehicles recently taken over by Mr. D. C. Draper (Drapers Transport),

Kiln Road, Thundersley, Essex, have flow been replaced by new Dodge 5-tonners. They are running to the South Coast, Bristol and Cardiff. Wrights (Colchester), Ltd., 45a SI Botolph's Street, Colchester, have made over two vehicles and two trailers (92 tons) to A. I. Hayward and Sons, Ltd., Mile End Road, Colchester, Es.sex.
