Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

By Andy Salter RENAULT TRUCKS is focusing on sustainable growth as it continues to make ground in the UK truck market over 6 tonnes, says its MD Marc Martinez (pictured). In April, the French irm posted an 8.2% share.

“We have been building a stronger brand image in the UK and have been careful to build a global offer in line with the customer’s needs,” he adds.

Renault has shown similar market growth in the past. In 2001, its share stood at over 7% as it aggressively bought its way into the market. Ultimately, over-exposure on buybacks and the collapse of City Trucks left the French truck builder vulnerable, and the subsequent collapse in RVs crippled its growth ambitions. Martinez is keen to avoid the same situation.

“The key is to ensure the growth is sustainable and this is our focus,” he says. “We are investing in the network to ensure we are able to support our customers and hold our position.” He adds: “We have targeted the rental and contract hire companies. Our UK order book is very strong – the third strongest in Europe behind France and Turkey.” Martinez also revealed that a diesel-electric hybrid Premium Distribution 6x2 rear steer rigid will go into service with Norbert Dentressangle later this year.

It will work in central London, running alongside conventional diesel-powered trucks to assess performance.
