Stourbridge, West Midlands DY9 BRG Stourbridge-based Lakeland, which builds both gas and petroleum carriers, has joined the under-5.2 tonne club with its new 42,000-litre six-compartment 'Innovator' spirit tanker.

Unlike its Heil and Cobo rivals, the 'Innovator' is the only competitive volume-built spirit tanker being made in Britain Having invested £0.5m in the design, Newell & Wright group member Lakeland, expects to build 50 in its first year, either for direct sale or as stock tankers.

Features include industry standard valves, top valance roll-over protection and reshaped bottom sumps for better product drainage.

With a 'circumferential extruded' oval barrel, standard BPW/ ROPJSAF running gear, Knorr Bremse EBR and roll stability, the prototype weighs around 5,175kg, but will be even lighter using Alcoa's and low profile tyres.

Lakeland's managing director Frank Newell says "spec-for-spec we're able to take more weight out of it".
