DaimlerChrysler, which owns Mercedes-Benz, is a partner in the Maut system along with French firm Cofiroute and Deutsche Telekom. The launch was delayed by 16 months following problems with the technology.
Now both sides in the dispute are becoming more entrenched. The plan is now to set up a committee to rule on the claim with the chairman of the German Supreme Court as president. The dispute could easily drag on until 2007.
Meanwhile the Maut is causing more and more problems on non-motorway routes. For example, the B3 from Rastatt to Baden-Baden and the B35 from Stuttgart to Karlsruhe are being clogged by a huge increase in truck traffic dodging the Autobahn.
Neighbouring countries like the Czech Republic, Netherlands and France are experiencing similar problems (CM 28 April).
• All trucks fitted with On-board Units must go to workshops for a free software update before 1 January 2006. TollColleet will then amend routes etc in the Maut system.
