Mr Tom Normanton (Tory. Cheadle) urged an extension of competitions such as that held by CM which highlighted the importance of excellence in driving techniques and gave recognition to people with the award of driver of the year.

Certain British manufacturers had been continuing this practice for a long time, noted Mr Normanton, and he asked if this was not an area in which the Department of the Environment might take some constructive part.

Mr Keith Speed, Under-Secretary DoE, recalled that both the Environment Secretary Mr Walker and the Minister for Transport Industries, Mr Peyton, had presented prizes to winners in national competitions.
