Operated Injection Pump

A R8stime of Patent Spedfications that Have Recently Been Published AMULTI-CYLINDERED injection pump, in which a single face-cam operates all the plungers in turn, is shown in patent No. 560,073, by E. Hall, 6, Station Road, Eckington, Sheffield, and others.

The drawing shows the general layout of the pump, in which 5 is the face-cam and 1 and 9 a pair of the four plungers employed. The cam moves rocker-arms (3 and 6) which pass on the motion via tappets (2) to the plungers. Adjustment of output is obtained by losing some of the motion of the cam; this is done 'by rotating -the rocker-carrier ring (9) " by means of a bevel gear (7); the tappets, being chamfered, act as variable-length distance pieces between the rockers

and the plungers. • The bevel (7), however, does more. than this; it meshes also with teeth on the tappet carrier (8) and can turn this too. The bevel gear is not located in a round hole but in a slot, and if it be moved along the slot without rotation it advances or. retards themoment of injection, without altering the quantity.

CONDITIONS on Colonial roads are ....probably the, chief reason for the spripg improvements shown in patent No. 560,090,., by L. Van Gran, Johannesburg, South Africa. This inventor describes an addition to an ordinary leaf spring which, by reducing rebound, is claimed to avoid fracture.

To the normal spring there is added

a pair of special blades (1), which are clamped at their inner, points and embrace the spring-eye at the outer end. Also, there is an. extra long leaf (3) located among the shorter normal leaves. The tips of the blade 3 are linked to the mid-points of blades 1 by means of clamps (2). On account of the lower natural frequency of the additional blades, the effect is to damp out excessive oscillations.

TIPPING GEAR WITH SAFETY HOLD-ON DEVICE

PATENT No. 559,637 describes improvements in hydraulic tipping gears, with the object of holding the load in the event of a fracture of the main pressure pipe. 'The patentees are Edwards Bros, (Tippers), Ltd., J. Edge, and J. Cosgrove, all of Springfield Garage, Bradford Street, Bolton The design illustrated has dual rams located in the reservoir containing the liquid, and this container acts as a genera I baseplate. The reservoir is pivoted on a pair of trunnions housed in bearings carried by brackets (2 and 7) attached to the chassis members, The rams ' carry trunnioned collars (1 and 8), which are attached to the bottom of the body. The fluid, Under pressure; travels from the pump via a pivotal connection (6) and passes into a duct containing a one-way valve (5), after which It is led to the rams. Attached to the axle of the. trailer is a pivoted arm .(2) which normally lies in the vertical position. The arm is linked to an air valve (1) in the main outlet pipe from the producer. The valve is kept on its seating by a spring, but, in the event of a puncture, the arm would be carried backwards by striking the ground and would thus open the air valve. This would so dilute the Mixture that the engine would stop. Whilst the device is simple we doubt the wisdom of cutting out the engine
