ROAD ACCIDENTS CAN BE, PREVENTED, SAYS MINISTER " THAT road accidents can be prevented has been shown," said Mr.. P. J. Noel-Baker, Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of . War Transport, speaking at the opening of a "Safety First " exhibition at Manchester, last week. " In Salford the problem has been tackled for 15 years. In 1928 36 people were killed and 730 injured, but • ,despite the fact that traffic doubled during the next 10. years drastic measures to prevent accidents reduced the figures in 1938 to 17 killed and 378 injured. Traffic was doubled yet accidents were halved.

" I have had private hints from people who should know better that the importance of toad accidents is being overdone in view of accidents in

other. spheres, Such an argument meant that the death,s of nearly 70,000 people in 10 years and the injury and 'maiming of 2,500,000 more was 110 more than a natural and inevitable consequence of modern rife, to be accepted without complaint and with

out introducing measures to keep the figures down."

Referring to road safety measures to. be introduced after the war, Mr. NoelBaker said that . a short-term programme. to be followed by a long-term programme was to be submitted to the Minister. The •short-term programme was to apply to the interim period immediately after the war when a flood of motor vehicles would return to the roads. In connection with the longterm policy he thought there was no doubt about some of the measures to be taken, amongst them being the segregation of different kinds of traffic.

• Improved measures for the maintenance of vehicles were also needed.

USEFUL BOOKLETS ON FUEL SAVING.

Two TWO useful Fuel and Efficiency' Bulletins, Nos, 29 and 30, issued, free, by the Ministry of Fuel and Power (Coal Division), Dean Stanley Street, London, S.W.1, or from the regional offices of the Ministry, deal with the industrial use of compressed air and the unorthodox use of economizers.

The.first should be particularly useful in our industry, which employs a considerable'.amount of compressed air for various purposes. Being cool, invisible and non-inflammable, compressed air lends itself to waste and is often flagrantly misused, every loss_ meaning extra fuel. LONDON DRIVERS WIN MANY SAFETY-FIRST AWARDS
