TWO, Three and Fivewheeled Trailing and Self -propelled Appliances Give Convincing Display Before Im portant Gathering AST week we gave a brief report of demonstration of fire-fighting appliances staged by Scammell Lorries, Ltd., Watford. Two of the machines which took part are shown in the accompanying pictures, together with some of the spectators, among whom were officials of the War Office and Air Ministry.

The first machine to perform was the Scaminell trailer pump, a model which has hfA,!n built for Government requirements, in considerable numbers, Powered by the maker's 15 la.p. fourcylindertd engine, which has. anoutput of 60 b.h.p., this pumping unit delivers water at 550 g.p.m. and a pres-aire of 60 lb. per sq. in.

Various jet equipment is provided. With two i-in, nozzles a pressure of 125 lb. per sq. in, can be generated; if breeching pieces be fitted to the delivery outlets, six i-in. jets can be thrown simultaneously at 100 lb. per sq. in., whilst by means of a collecting piece, two hoses can be fitted to one branch with a nozzle and water delivered at 140 lb. per sq. in. A feature of the centrifugal single-stage pump is that it can be primed by an exhaust-operated ejector.

Self-contained, because it carries its own 300-gallon water supply, and highly manceuvrable by reason of its wheel layout, the Scammell threewheeler has a capacity of 25 g.p.m. at

175 lb. per sq. in. The propelling engine, in this case, drives the pump via a power take-off. Included in the equipment are two hose reels and a sealing ladder. Mounted at the rear is an entirely separate pumping unit which can he detached and carried by two men to places inaccessible to wheeled appliances. This outfit is built to Home Office requirements and can deliver water at 120 g.p.m.

Comprising a Scammell mechanical horse and an easily detachable semitrailer, the third machine carries a 1,250-gallon tank and has a separate pumping engine. This auxiliary plant

has a capacity of 295 g.p.m. at 150 lb. per sq. in.

Provision is made for using side sprays with disinfecting or decontaminating fluids. There is a sprinkler head on each side and the maximum width of spray is 90 ft. This feature has been proved of great value for combating heath fires. When not engaged in fire fighting, the outfit can be employed for street washing.

Convincing demonstrations of its varied capabilities were given, not the least impressive of these being that showing its use in conjunction with Pyrene foam-making apparatus.
