HERE were no high spots in the 1 speeches at this year's annual dinner of the National Association of Furniture Warehousemen and Removers and, although Mr. Gleeson Robinson, Metropolitan Licensing Authority, caused the eyebrows of some of the assembly to be raised when he expressed the view that trade associations could learn useful lessons from the totalitarian countries, the evening, for the main part, was one of bonhomie.

Mr. Robinson also said that he had found the trade associations connected with transport services most helpful in his official capacity, and he has always tried to support them. The N.A,F.W.R. was quick to recognize that the Road and Rail Traffic Act represented a charter for the Members' business. Like all associations, the N.A.F.W.R. has had good and bad times, but, using an apt metaphor, he said that it had always been " in the van," Mr. J. L. Gerson, president of the Association, who occupied the chair, paid a compliment to the work of the Licensing Authorities, and to the way they have carried 'out their duties under the Act. He emphasized that the problem of a schedule of rates for the removals trade was an extremely thorny question.

Major H. E. Cmwfurd, in a breezy speech, had several tilts at Mr_ Robinson. In referring to the new Minister of Transport, he amused the assembly by his reference to the " continuity of removal" of Ministers.
