HOTEL PRICES AND MOTOR COACHING.

How the Coach Owner Brings Business to the Hotel Proprietor. The Need for Reasonable Charges for Accommodation.

MITE motor coach tour extending from '1 a. week to a fortnight is doing much for the prosperity of hotels in popular resorts. This is a feature of the industrial towns of the north all the way from Newcastle to Liverpool, including Bradford and Leeds on the way. Proprietors of chars-à-banes are finding a large clientele among people who like to know exactly what their holiday will cost, and who want to be saved the worry of having to find their own accommodation.

The motor coach proprietor gets into touch with the proprietors of the hotels in the various towns en route and can generaliy fill all the vacant bedrooms. Ile naturally prefers to maintain association with the hotel which has served him well in the past, and, just as naturally, resents any suggestion of increased charges when he is trying to keep expenses down in order to meet the renewed activity and advertising of the railway companies with whom he is in competition.

A representative of The Commercial Motor has been shown letters from various hotels to a leading motor coach proprietor in the North of England, asking for another shilling on last year's tariff. Some of the proprietors of hotels in smaller places have raised their prices to the level of those of the large hotels in expensive resorts.

In a small Derbyshire village 4s. Oil. is being asked for lunches for 28 passengers. This does not leave much fer the use of the char-a-banes on an inclusive fare of half-a-guinea.

The matter is one that is occasioning much criticism, and we would ask hotel pruprietors to recognize the value of the motor coach in bringing custom—custom that should be encouraged by fair stabilized charges and not spoilt by raising prices.
