Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

The Northern General Transport Co., Ltd., of Chester-le-Street, have now taken delivery of the first batch of light and speedy pneumatic-tyred buses, which, as was intimated in our report of the company's annual meeting published in a recent issue, they are purchasing for the purpose of combating competition in the Wearside neighbourhood.

These new vehicles are of the singledecker saloon type, providing seating for 31 persons, and are similar to the new machines recently put into commission by the Birmingham and Mid n38

land Omnibus Co., Ltd., which have already been described in The Commercial Motor. The new buses delivered to the " Northern " company are equipped with Dunlop pneumatics, and are extremely smart in appearance. Some of them are already in use in the Sunderland vicinity, and others will be put into service as they arrive.

In that neighbourhood the Northern General Transport Co., Ltd., are continuing their developments at a rapid rate, as also are the Sunderland and, District Transport Co., who only about a year ago commenced to substitute buses for their tramway system. At a recent meeting of the Houghton-leSpring Urban District Council applications were received from both companies for additional licences. The former sought to secure the necessary permission with respect to that area for 26 new vehieles in connection with their through route to Seaham, whilst the latter made a request for running powers for another ten 32-seater buses, and intimated that they expect, in the course of a few weeks, to substitute buses for trams over the Houghton to Herrington Burn route. Both requests were granted.
