As a result, it is hard for the authorities to identify and address penalty charge notice (PCN) hotspots. Following a meeting of the London Councils' Transport and Environment Committee last week, all councils in the capital are now being asked to work with Transport for London (T1L) to upgrade their parking software so civil enforcement officers across the capital can capture data relating to the type of vehicle they are ticketing.

TfL wants to build up a Londonwide picture of PCN hotspots and. in return, has offered to provide boroughs with training and best practice advice. In a statement,TIL says any upgrade could form part of regular software improvements.

Gordon Telling, London policy manager at the Freight Transport Association, adds: "This is an excellent idea and we are delighted to see it is being taken forward."
