Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Fresh from winning a contract from Reckitt & Colman, P&O Ferrymasters looks set to benefit again as the household goods manufacturer prepares further study of its distribution activities.

The large international transport contract has barely settled in, but now the two companies are starting to study how they can work together on the international carriage of raw materials into Reckitt & Colman's European factories.

This month Ferrymasters expects to have fully taken on the household product contract which involves collecting palletised loads from factories in the UK, France, Germany and Spain and delivering around Europe. Ferrymasters will carry around 200,000 tonnes of household goods a year.

Until now Reckitt & Colman had used up to 30 hauliers with each country deciding on who was used. Up to 10 hauliers had been used between the UK and the Continient.

Reckitt & Colman European transport co-ordinator Ted Burnside says more change is on the way: "We've set up a partnership with Ferrymasters and so far we've only looked at one link in the supply chain. There are more savings to be had in co-ordinating incoming and outgoing goods."
