Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

• Iveco Ford has been testing an uprated version of its 8460 9.5-litre in-line-six engine. Power output is said to be 276kW (370hp); an increase of 18% over the 234kW (314hp) produced by the 8460 in the 190.32 tractive units.

The engine was spotted during lubrication testing at Fiat Lubrificanti near Turin last week. Numbered 8460 41 502, it is charge-cooled, like the 234kW version, but also has molybdenum topped pistons.

It could be destined for the new heavyweight Cargo tractive units which IFT is known to be developing. The old range included a lightweight 38-tonner, but the current range does not include new Cargo tractive units above 32 tonnes GCW. These will be powered by a new charge-cooled 7.7-litre 196kW (266hp) engine, effectively making lower powered versions of the 9,5-litre engine redundant.

It also brings the output of the 8460 uncomfortably close to that of the 13.8-litre 8210 engine fitted to the 190.36 and 220.36 TurboTechs and 190.36 TurboStar. With the potential for weight saving Iveco Ford Will almost certainly revise its tractive unit engine options.

The heavier 8210 engine will probably be dropped in 281kW (377hp) guise, leaving plenty of scope for further developments.

The 13.8-litre engine was last uprated 18 months ago, when power was boosted from 265kW (360hp).

Up to 373kW (500hp) is clearly in reach from the in-line six, but IFT may choose to wait for a revised TurboStar cab before boosting power further.
