Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

SOUTH WALES drivers are atte their 1983 wage claim, and are companies which do not settle.

The trade union side of the joint industrial council met last week, with representatives present from the Transport and General Workers Union, United Road Transport Union, and the General Municipal Boilermakers and Allied Trades Union. So far, only about 20 agreements have been reached with employers on the £90 basic rate being sought by the unions.

1 hey have requested a further meeting with employers, who have yet to make any formal offer this year, saying this must happen by March 31. Road Haulage Association South Wales assistant manager Peter Webb told CM that the employers will meet the unions, but suspected that this could not be arranged before early April.

All three unions are seeking plenary powers to take industrial action against companies which do not reach 1983 agreements with them.

TGWU officer Geoff Jacob told CMthat the 20 companies which already have agreed £90 rates with their drivers would be excluded from any action, but action would be taken against companies which offer less then that. He said some companies were willing to pay around four per cent, but acknowledged that the RHA had succeeded in making its no-offer-meantime policy stick with most members.
