CHASSIS DEVELOPMENTS of Leighton Buzzard has developed a conversion for the Ford Cargo 1713, 17-tonne gcw automatic coupling tractive unit as a replacement for the now discontinued DA1610 model.

The chassis frame top height has been reduced by 114mm (4.5in) over a 610mm (241n) length to give a 812mm (321n) frame height between the rear axle.

Diagonal flange-width gusset plates maintain the frame strength over the ramped portion while a new shallower cross member is added at the rear of the down swept section. Behind this, the profile of the chassis sidemembers matches the lead ramps of the BS AU 30 Hands type automatic coupling assembly.

Its wheelbase is reduced from 3m (9.92ft) to 2.54m (8.33ft) which assists fore and aft weight distribution and manoeuvreability.

The Cargo's standard, drive axle springs have been replaced by shorter 1,142mm (45in) D Series seven leaf springs due to the changes in profile of the chassis longitudinals.

Its replacement springs also have a smaller, light laden deflection to ensure that the coupling ramps can engage with the flanged wheels of the trailer fore-carriage in virtually all conditions.

Modifications to the tractors' braking system ensure that two and three line semi-trailers can be coupled via triple "susie connections while EEC regulations on secondary and park brake requirements are met fully.

Kerb weight of the converted tractor complete with coupling is approximately 3.5 tonne and is capable of coupling with all Hands, Scammell or Tasker semi trailers.

Boots Company of Nottingham has followed a three months trial operation of the prototype by ordering 13 of the conversions.
