Priority plea

A PLEA from the Road Haulage Asseciation's car transport group for car drivers to give trucks priority in the centre lane of three-lane roads has been made this week.

It comes from the chairman of the group, Mr Ron Halifax of Cartransport Ltd. "This is particularly relevant now that holiday traffic is beginning to build up," he said. "Many motorists can easily forget that heavy lorries are not allowed to use the fast lane and are unable to maintain their schedules if the centre lane is blocked."

High appeal

MEMBERS of the RHA's car transport group are appealing to members for information about low bridges which are not marked or marked wrongly.

The group's chairman Mr Ron Halifax said that there should be a clear indication of all bridges under 16ft Gin and the clearance should be checked after repairs to the road below.

Bumper bundle

NEW-STYLE bumpers on cars mean that it is increasingly difficult for car transporters to carry full loads, says a report from the RHA's car transporters' group.

They are to continue to call for an increase in the maximum length of commercial vehicles to maintain full loads. An increase in length of half a metre is likely under EEC regulations and they are to press for it to be brought in.

Beating a ban

WACRO Lines' new ro-ro service to Nigeria beat the recent abortive coup there and managed a return journey that beat the ban on outgoing flights imposed by the Nigerian government.

Despite a complete breakdown in postal and business services during the coup the Falster sailed on time and was back in Felixstowe for re-loading before the flights ban was lifted.
