Exhibit :—Compound Tractor.
The five-ton tractor which is shown by Richard Garrett and Sons, Limited, of the Leiston Works, Suffolk, is one of that company's standard, compound engines, such as have been shown by this maker at many previous exhibitions. Its most distinctive feature is its fire box ; the crown of this is of corrugated form, and, owing to its shape, requires no staying, and it is free to expand or contract without fear of strainingany of the plating or the riveted joints. The deep corrugation gives an increased amount of heating surface at a point which has been proved by experiments to be the most effective part of a fire box, so far as evaporative capacity is concerned.
This engine is provided with a special form of starting gear, which is operated by a single starting lever. It is
as a simple engine with two cylinders, into each of which high-pressure steam is admitted. When working in the latter form, each cylinder has a separate exhaust ; the engine is thus able to develop a very much higher horse power, for short periods, than is possible when the engine is working as a compound motor. This fitting is especially useful, for occasional use for starting with heavy loads, or for extricating the machine from bad places in a road.
Another feature of the Garrett tractor is the " cannon " bracket ; this is the bracket which carries the bearings for the intermediate gear shaft. It is made of cast steel, and reaches from one horn-plate to the other, being attached to them by fitting bolts ; the
