• Twelve road schemes, including the Salisbury bypass and the Birmingham Relief Road, could be axed as part of a wideranging Government review into the future of roadbuilding in the UK.
The fate of the schemes will be announced next month following an "accelerated review". But road schemes which have already begun, such as the Newbury bypass, will not be affected.
Transport Minister Dr Gavin Strang says the review will assess the schemes' environmental impact, the use of other modes of transport, and the role of technology and information systems.
A Government white paper covering all modes of transport, due to published next spring, will also look at the need for funding public transport. It will examine options including motorway tolls and congestion charges in urban areas.
Public consultation on the review will start in July with responses due by the end of October.
