THElnew Morris 5-cwt. van introduced this week

by the Nuffield Organization embodies many features of the Morris Minor car. It is powered by the B.M.C. 800 c.c. push-rod-operated overheadvalve engine, which develops 30 b.h.p. at 4,800 r.p.m. and produces a maximum torque of 40 lb.ft. at 2,400 r.p.m.

It has a three-bearing crankshaft and steel backed white-metal-lined bearings. The eccentric-type oil pump is driven from the end of the camshaft, the latter being chain driven from the crankshaft. The external oil filter is a full-flow component.

An S.U. electric pump feeds the S.U. automatic carburetter from a five-gallon rear-mounted petrol tank. An airintake silencer is fitted to the home models, and an oil-bath air cleaner on the export version.

a24 A Borg and Beck single-plate clutch takes the drive to a four-speed gearbox having synchromesh engagement for second, third and fourth gears. .

Gear control is by a centrally placed lever, the box providing ratios of 21.98, 13.91, 9.05 and 5.37 to 1, with a 27.81 to 1 reverse. The drive to the semifloating hypoid-driven rear axle is by a Hardy Spicer propeller shaft with needle-bearing universal joints.

At the front the wheels are independ

ently sprung by long torsion bars with control by piston-type hydraulic shock absorbers. The semi-elliptic spring; at the rear are rubber-mounted and controlled by telescopic hydraulic shock absorbers with anti-sway mountings. The hydraulic brakes are by Lockheed; they have a simple form of shoe adjust. ment which, at the same time, adjusts the centrally positioned hand-brake lever, which is connected by cable to the rear shoes.

The disc wheels are fixed by four studs and are equipped with 5.00-14-in tyres. Ott the pick-up body the spare wheel is carried in the cab and in the case of the van it is mounted on thc body wall.

The 12-volt electrical system includes a compensated-voltage-control dynamo, dipping head lamps with pre-focused bulbs, separate side lamps, a footoperated dip switch and twin stop tail lamps.

Some of the leading dimensions are as follows:—Wheelbase, 7 ft. 2 in.: . overall length, 11 ft. 10;1 in.; overall width, 5 ft. 0 in.; overall height of van and pick-up with tilt erected 5 ft. 51 in. The capacity of the body is 78 Cu. ft., plus 12 Cu. ft. beside the driver.
