CARGO.—The meat and general traffic moved in the week ended June 5 by the Hauliers' Pool and the Chartered Fleet totalled over 142,000 tons, In addition to this traffic, extensive movements of livestock and scrap were carried out.

CHARTERED FLEET---At the end of last week the number of vehicles on charter, other than those engaged primarily in the movement of meat, was over 400. It is intended to increase this figure to 500 by the end of the month. The summaries of work done, submitted by the area officers, indicate that vehicles as a whole are being economically and efficiently operated and that most of the traffic carried is on journeys of more than 25 miles.

CLAIM FORMS.—TO facilitate the checking of claim forms and thus expedite payments, owners of chartered vehicles are asked to submit the form of claim (R.H./C.12) at the end of each week instead of at the end of each fortnight. The form should be accompanied by the vehicle weekly journey

sheets, to which should be attached the receipt notes for the journeys made. In the past,. receipt notes have been sent to the office for the area in which the traffic originated. This practice is being discontinued and all the relevant papers should now be addressed to the office of the area in which The vehicle is based, whether the traffic originated in that area or not.

MEAT SECTION APPOINTMENT.—Mr. H. F. Minter, who was a Deputy Chief Road Haulage Officer, has been appointed Assistant Director (Meat) in charge, under the Director, of the Meat section of the Road Haulage Branch, DEFENCE LINES.—Thanks are due to the owners of the 580 vehicles which

were offered in the week ended June 6 for enrolment in the Defence Lines. These additions brought the total up to over 35,000. At the risk of appearing hard to satisfy, however, it must be made plain that the scale is at preseht entirely inadequate. There can be no assurance that the Defence Lines will be equal to emergencies until the present number of enrolments is at least trebled.

COUNTY SCRAP AGENTS.—Frather appointments have been made in the Newcastle-Upon-Tyne area as follow:— Wallsend (including Longbenton U.D., Coo' forth LLD., Seaton D d Valley U..).—Walisen
