Model RD4, the Smallest Oiler in the Range, Now Available in This Country. A New Concessionnaire Appointed

AN accompanying illustration shows a recent addition to the range of Caterpillar track-laying tractors marketed in Great Britain, It is called model RD4 and is the smallest oil-engined machine made by the Caterpillar company. It is offered to meet the demand of the agriculturist, or other type of operator, who requires an oilengined tractor of a size which has hitherto been available only in paraffin or petrol-engined form.

For. Caterpillar products a new concessionnaire for south and south-west England has just been appointed, namely, Jack Olding and Co., Ltd., 101. Grosvenor Road, London, S.W.1; in' the eastern and north-western counties they ars handled, as in the past, by H. Leverton and Co., Spalding, Lincolnshire.

The range includes tractors from 25 h.p. to 95 h.p. and a variety of road-making, grading and similar constructional equipment.

In general layout, the new machine resembles closely the larger models of similar type which are well-known. B56 The four-cylindered power unit develops 95 drawbar h.p. and 41 belt-pulley h.p. Its dimensions are 4f ins, bore by 5* ins, stroke, giving a capacity of 312 cubic ins. Governed at 1,400 r.p.rn., it develops maximum torque at 900 r.p.m. Thus, when the machine is slowed down by an overload, the actual pull exerted increases by nearly 10 per cent. At governed speeds the drawbar pulls in the five gears are, respectively, 7,725 lb., 5,475 lb., 4,170 lb., 3,195 lb. and 1,880 lb., whilst the speeds are 1.7 m.p.h., 2.4 m.p.h., 3 m.p.h., 3.7 m.p.h. and 5.4 m.p.h.

Having an area of contact with the ground of 1,599 sq. ins., the tracks are 5 ft. If in. between sprocket centres and 13 ins, wide, whilst the gauge is normally 3 ft. 8 ins., but may be increased to 5 ft. A ground clearance of 11* ins, is afforded, the overall length of the machine is 10 ft. 9 ins., the width 5 ft. 2 ins:, and the weight about 41 tons.

Noteworthy features of the machine include the system of transmitting weight to the track-roller frames, the use of a transverse equalizer spring, upon which the base of the engine is flexibly mounted, and the system of ensuring easy starting of the oil engine under all conditions.

For this purpose a 10 b.h.p. two-cylindered horizontally opposed petrol engine is mounted at the rear of the main power unit. This can be engaged with. the crankshaft which it is capable of turning against full compression for an indefinite period.
