UNLADEN WEIGHT INCREASED BY USE?

A case showing the risk of building a vehicle to too fine a weight limit was decided at Newport (Mon.) Police Court, on Saturday last, when Messrs. E. Russell and Sons, C,efn Garage, Rogerstone, were accused of having made to the county authority an inaccurate declaration of the unladen weight of a lorry.

The prosecution contended that when all the parts of the lorry were included it weighed 2 tons 12 cwt., and not 2 tons 10 cwt., as declared.

The defendants, who accepted the lower speed limit applicable, and_ were ready to pay'additional licence duty of Rd 16s. 8d., denied any offence. The vehicle was specified as of 21-ton unladen weight and the body was built to the chassis maker's specification. The weight when it was fitted was 2f tons unladen.

The lorry had, since March, covered 17,000 miles and by the accumulation of grease, tar, etc., and as a result of corrosion and the absorption of moisture by wood, the extra 2 cwt. might, it was contended, have been brought about by use.

The magistrates dismissed the case.
