The Vehicle Inspectorate has opened a lagship testing station in Manchester— its first new site for 10 years—but has no )lans for further building projects.

At the opening of the Chadderton site, in chief executive Maurice Newey said: Some older stations are getting towards the end of their obvious lifespan," But he idded: "We are looking to see where there s a case for modernisation."

The £6.5m Chadderton site will handle 200,000 vehicle tests a year.
