THE Road Transport Industry Training Board is to spend £1.5m to assist employers in maintaining adequate levels in the recruitment of young peop e.

The Board is proposing an extra grant of £150 in respect of all apprentices taken on after May 31, 1980, to be made available to all registered employers, including those exempt from levy, receiving levy rebate grant for apprentices, or excluded from levy by virtue of low emoluments.

The grant would apply to all types of training, provided a formal training agreement had been made with the apprentice by that date — which had resulted in satisfactory progress in Stage 1 training — and that the employer certifies that it is intended to provide a full apprenticeship.

A young hgv driver training grant of £800 is proposed for each trainee registered with the National Joint Training Committee on or after August 1, applying to the present MSC grant which ceases on July 31, payable after six months satisfactory training.

As soon as the Manpower Services Commission has given

approval for the scheme, further information will be given by the press and the Board's own publication Transport Training.

The Board has a duty to provide incentives for recruitment and training to fulfill the industry's long-term requirements and does not intend to place a numerical limit on the grants_
