Which of the following most accurately describes the problem?

by lain Sherrift • The directors of Thoresen Car Ferries Ltd. have recommended acceptance of a take-over offer to their shareholders. The offer is made by George Watt Industries which, after the take-over would change its name to European Ferries Ltd. It already controls Townsend Car Ferries Ltd.

The new company would operate under both the Townsend and Thoresen flags and have a combined fleet of eight vessels in service by the spring of 1969. The intention is that there should be a central booking agency for traffic going through Southampton and Dover.

The merger means that the company would operate over 20 sailings daily and offer complete flexibility to its customers. Mr. Rupert Hambro, of Hambros Bank, who is handling the deal told me this week that operators would no longer be bound to leave France by the port they used for entry. The advantage here is that a semitrailer can be sent out via Southampton and returned via Dover if it is more convenient to the operator.

Alternatively an operator who has used Dover as an exit port and obtained a return load for South West England can now return through Southampton. Operators will have the facilities of the four channel ports of Zeebrugge, Calais, Le Havre and Cherbourg.
